A 21-year old man phoned police after allegedly being kidnapped by Edward Lanphear and chained up naked inside the man's garage in Saratoga. He managed to escape and ran to a neighbor's house. When police arrived to investigate, they found another missing man chained up inside Lanphear's basement.
The 21-year old's story
Sometime Sunday (7/6) or Monday (7/7), after gettting drunk at Johnny's Bar in Wisconsin Rapids, a 21-year old man (name withheld in the media) passed out in his car, then later woke up naked, blindfolded and hanging in Lanphear's garage, his hands bound by chains and flex cuffs. The man somehow escaped and fled, still wearing chains, to a house across the street, where people there called police. The 21-year old identified his captor as Edward Lanphear, who was a regular customer at Johnny's Bar. Lanphear is said to have played pool there once a week, always drinking soda, not alcohol. The 21-year old man told authorities Lanphear hit him with a metal pipe and sexually assaulted him. Officers went to the scene and found the 23-year-old man restrained in Lanphear's basement.
The 23-year old's story
Twenty-three year old, "K" (name withheld for privacy) disappeared Friday, July 4 after telling friends he was going to walk home from a Fourth of July fireworks show in Wisconsin Rapids. "K" ended up getting a ride from Lanphear. During the course of driving, Lanphear pulled over, told "K" he was a police office, and handcuffed him. When one of the handcuffs became loose, Lanphear hit "K" in the head and knocked him out. When "K" revived, he found himself chained up in Lanphear's basement. Court documents say Lanphear then tied a string from a shotgun to the chains to prevent "K" from escaping. He sexually assaulted the young man at least three times while he was restrained. "K's" ordeal had no end in sight...until the 21-year old man made his own daring escape from Edward Lanphear's garage on Tuesday, July 8.
Investigators had searched for three days between Wisconsin Rapids and "K's" home in Grand Rapids, before calling off the search. There seemed to be no trace of the young man and no clues to his whereabouts.
Police find hundreds of odd items in Lanphear's home
Wood County sherriff's office seized hundreds of items from Lanphear's home as evidence, including: different types and sizes of chains, locks, ropes, zip ties, duct tape, a noose, two dozen firearms, mostly rifles and shotguns, pill bottles, gay pornography and various blankets, rugs and clothing with stains on them. A newspaper from Monday, July 7 was recovered from the scene, which covered the missing Wood County men, with certain articles highlighted. Some of the evidence was sent to the Wisconsin State Crime Lab for analysis, the rest is being processed locally.
There was also a newspaper clipping about the death of college student Brittany Zimmerman, a Marshfield native who was stabbed in her Madison apartment. Zimmerman was a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Police are investigating whether Lanphear is connected to Zimmerman's murder.
