Shortly before 9 a.m., on Tuesday, July 19, 2005 Ames Police received an emergency call from a person who reportedly located a white male unconscious in College Creek between two parking lots on the Iowa State University campus. The area is known as campus town and is in the 100 block of Hayward Avenue.

The body of Jacob B. Hobson was recovered from the creek. Hobson, a senior from Eldora, was majoring in psychology and lived at 4606 Ontario St., #10, in Ames.

A preliminary autopsy showed Hobson died as a result of drowning and blunt force trauma to the head in the early morning hours of July 19. It is believed that Hobson accidentally fell from the creek bridge, hitting his head on the culvert below, and drowned in the culvert, which held a few inches of water.
