04/05/09: Dan Zamlen, 18, St. Paul, MN

Eighteen-year old Dan Zamlen, a freshman at the University of St. Thomas left a party hosted by classmates near the St. Thomas campus, reportedly upset about something. He was walking along Mississippi River Blvd near St. Clair Avenue on a trail. The trail had a grassy area next to it and then a wooded slope. He said he was headed to the University of Minnesota to meet some friends and was talking to friend Anna Chappuis on his cell phone who said she would pick him up. It was 2:30 a.m., and although she does not remember word for word what he said, Chappuis says she remembers hearing, "Oh my God. Help." before the call ended abruptly.

Friends and family tried looking for Dan and calling him repeatedly, getting his voicemail each time until about 8:30 a.m. when his phone went dead, which is when they called police.

Dan's body was found in the Mississippi River on May 1, 2009. Police believe he may have gotten too close to the river and slipped. The Ramsey County medical examiner's office ruled the death an accidental drowning and the St. Paul Police Department had closed the case. Police said they were still investigating how Dan, who was underage, got alcohol.

The Search for Dan

Search teams scoured the bluffs and banks of the Mississippi all morning and afternoon on May 1. Helicopters with infared flew overhead, water patrol checked along shore. Friends and family searched in culverts, brush, trees and alleys; and the University of St. Thomas organized a block by block, door-to-door search. Police did find a footprint leading away from the river, in the direction of the road, but they could not say for certain that it belonged to Dan.

Over the 27 days he was missing, more than 1,200 people searched for Dan Zamlen.

Parents express frustration before House of Representatives

Dan's parents testified before the MN House of representatives on 4/15/09 to help enact Brandon's Law, which would require law makers to take reports and investigate missing adults without delay when they are endangered.

During testimony, Dan's parents, Dale and Sally, reported frustration with the police for keeping searchers away from the bluff and also refusing to go search it because it was "too dangerous."

The Zamlen's feel that had the search been expedited, Dan could have been found quickly. Although Dan disappeared in a cell phone dead zone between a tower for Minneapolis and a tower for St. Paul, Dan was very technologically saavy and had an I-Phone. The I-Phone comes with a GPS "ping," making it easier to track one's location. This phone was paid for by Dan's parents and was in his mother's name, yet they were refused access to the information without a court order.

On Wednesday, May 6, 2009 Gov. Tim Pawlenty signed Brandon's Law, which would eliminate waiting periods when adults disappear under suspicious circumstances, or when young adults up to age 21 are reported missing under most circumstances.

Family belives it was an abduction

During the testimony before the House of Representatives, Dale said that he believed Dan was abducted. He said that although the Missing Persons Unit quickly zoned in on the river area, other facts seemed to rule out the river. He noted that 8 bloodhounds had searched the area on Tuesday (4/7) or Wednesday (4/8), and kept stopping in the same place, but did not go near the river. He also said that "side scanning sonar" had been used to search the river as well as infared. He also said that he works as an open pit miner and walked through the area, and did not feel that someone would easily slip there. And if they did, it would leave a mark. Nothing was in the area where Dan was found. He also felt that Dan's training as an Eagle Scout would have prepared him for an accident outdoors.

Dan Zamlen recovered from Mississipi River

On May 1, 2009 at 11:46 a.m, the body of Dan Zamlen was pulled from the Mississippi River near the Ford Motor Co. power plant in St. Paul. The Ford plant is down river from the area where Zamlen went missing on April 5. Workers at the plant found the body while cleaning grates that catch debris in the river near the power plant. A wallet found on the body and also a positive identification by Dan's parents, Dale and Sally Zamlen, confirmed that it was Dan.

The body was taken to the Ramsey County coroner's office. Police did not say whether there were signs of foul play. St. Paul Police spokesman Pete Panos said he believes Zamlen fell down the bluff and into the river.

The Ramsey County medical examiner's office later ruled the death an accidental drowning and the St. Paul Police Department closed the case. At the time, police said they were still investigating how Dan, who was underage, got alcohol.

New information released by police

On February 8, 2010, WCCO reported that the police had released new details to the media, including 400 pages of documents that supposedly detail that friends were worried about Zamlen months before he disappeared. Two friends say Zamlen was deeply conflicted about his own sexual orientation. In the initial police report and witness statements, friends say Zamlen talked about possibly killing himself the night he disappeared." Police say they released the information because the case was ruled an accidental drowning, and the investigation is now complete barring new evidence or information.

However, Dan's parents, Dale and Sally Zamlen, of Eveleth don't believe the case should closed. They cite numerous questions left unanswered in the case, such as how Dan Zamlen got down to the river from the bluffs without injury. St. Louis County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Uncini of Hibbing, who performed a second autopsy at the request of the family, said Zamlen did not have injuries that would suggest he tumbled or fell down the rocky or brush-filled slope like the one near where Dan Zamlen was last seen. “It is likely he drowned,"Uncini told the Duluth News Tribune, "but I feel the manner of death cannot be determined and requires more police investigation and/or access to existing police records." So the question that remains is how the case could be concluded when the additional police investigation recommended by the medical examiner was not done. "There are facts that the police didn’t look at; there are questions that are legitimate," said Sally Zamlen.

Also noted is the discovery of baseball with a smiley face on it as well as a sign marked with smiley face graffiti near the bluffs, evidence of a possible smiley face killer. Police say they were not able to connect the items to Zamlen's death, but the family has been in contact with the New York investigators looking into the smiley face killer theory.

In addition to the speculation raised by the graffiti, there appears to be varying accounts reported by witnesses who were at the party that night, including variations on what was said during Dan's final cell phone call. Many are left to wonder why the police are relying so heavily on witness statements when they appear to have so many holes.

Furthermore, a toxicology screening at the time of second autopsy uncovered the presence of Gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid [GHB] in Zamlen’s body. GHB is a powerful intoxicant, coined a "date rape drug," because it is easily slipped into someone's drink and can quickly lead to a loss of muscle control or even consciousness when combined with alcohol. While GHB can be produced naturally in the body, Uncini could not exclude the possibility that Zamlen had ingested it. Police reports indicate that Zamlen had been drinking, and while he may have brought his own alcohol to the party, there are indications that he could have purchased some alcohol at the party.

Police say they would not be able to charge hosts of the party in relation to Zamlen's underage alcohol use, because it would be difficult to prove that the hosts had provided him with any alcohol.

According to the Duluth News Tribune, "Sally Zamlen said she’s spent the past 10 months reading and re-reading the statements of her son’s friends and acquaintances. She’s searched the Internet seeking information on forensic pathology and stages of decomposition in a drowning victim. She’s offended that two female acquaintances of her son told police that he was suicidal because he thought he was gay and he told them he was going to kill himself that night. “My son can’t dispute that — he’s dead,’’ she said and added that there is no evidence that her son even talked to the women who made the claim. “I think he got in a vehicle and I personally believe he went into a diabetic coma, and whoever was with him thought he was dead and panicked,’’ she said. “That’s been my feeling since April 5. “I’m going to continue to go through this paperwork and continue to get more opinions and continue to gather more information,’’ she said.

About Dan Zamlen

Dan was a A-student and a 3-star athlete. He ran 10 miles a day, often running to the Ford Plant, U of M, or State Capitol, and according to his father, had the heart rate of a marathon runner. His parents described him as having a "good head on his shoulders." He was an altar boy and catechism teacher, as well as an Eagle Scout. About a year ago, Dan suspected he had diabetes and went to the doctor; he found out he was a Type I diabetic. Being very saavy about technology, he decided to get an OmniPod insulin pump, which carried enough for a 3-day supply of insulin.

About 100 students and relatives gathered Friday evening (May 1) at St. John Vianney Seminary. Rev. William Baer said so much heart went into the search that it was hard to have it end this way.

Also I don't think BITM or Batman is a fed. Think he just has strong opinions. Law enforcement would never be so obvious in using the word "lay-people" to indicate he might be a cop or in law.
Anyway, I can have some strong opinions too and don't mind be challenged especially on points I never mentioned.
I'd like to be respectful here in this site is for Dan, not ourselves and I think people may lash out because of the stress of the whole situation.

bitm is the one "lashing out". Can't you get in through yers hed.

Anonymous above me:
Of course I see that!.It just doesn't ruffle my feathers as he is a complete stranger to me. One has to pick their battles in life and so this matter is small potatoes to me. This is the only site I write on and people here have stated he causes trouble on other sites. Anger issues? Who knows but I refuse to play. And if I am wrong or challenged I like to rethink things. If I am lashed out at I always wonder what is wrong with that person and don't take it personally.

I like this site in that it opens a door for communication and discussion about the disappearance of Dan. Today is 2 weeks that he has gone missing. No trace what so ever....

After volunteer today I walked to Saint Clair and said a prayer. Feel helpless in being able to help these parents in finding their son.I have searched and donated $ yet still wish there was more we could do.

If anyone would like to donate $ go to www.finddan.org.

So now I'm being accused of starting problems at other sites? LOL

Seriously, it's time for the godlikeproductions crowd to go back where they came from.

It's time the sfkillers speculation end on this blog or at least be made under the correct blog post.

Friends,

When I was a twenty year old junior at Bemidji State, I became very drunk and angry one night, out at a bar called Jack's where my friends and U had gone to drink and dance. I drank 11 martinis on an empty stomach and decided to walk homne from the bar, approximately five miles in cold November during hunting season. As I walked down the highway I blacked out and kept walking right off a service road and intoa a swamp, where I "came to" and realized I would probably die. That I didn't, and that my screams for help were heard by a hunter and his wife who happened to inhabit the only cabin in a five square mile radius is nothing short of miraculous to me, astonishing. As it was, both of my feet had frostbite ( both of my shoes remained behind in the peat bogs) and my face was deeply cut by sharp low hanging tree branches as I flailed my way to who knows where. Anyone who drinks too much can die of it in all kinds of ugly ways and I almost did so. Also, wwhen I was 18 and 19, attending the U, I thought NOTHING of walking down the River Road to meet my lover at Macalester College, and vice versa, well into the middle of the night.

I keep this young man and his family in my prayers.

I am glad you are okay and thanks for sharing your story. I'll bet that was a wake up call for you!

No one disputes that alcohol makes people do crazy things. When I was in college (Milw. and Madison) guys often left parties on their own to walk home because they drank too much. Thankfully, they all made it home.

The difference with Dan is that he left(perhaps to make a 3 mi. walk to the U of MN) requested help 5 blocks from the party and there is no trace of him.The Bloodhounds(a foot print, cell phone trace) have his last location and the area has been searched for a 5 mile radius yet he has not been found. The treees are bare so this makes the search much easier.Sadly,if he had been found laying in the snow by his last known location people would not be all over this. He simply vanished...no trace of him.

The question is, why was he asking for help? Also he knew someone was on their way to pick him up so even if he continued walking on River Rd. (so he could be spotted by the person picking him up) where did he go? The fresh snow that had fallen that evening was not disturbed by the bluffs the police said.

While I understand alcohol does make people do crazy things (like they think they can walk long ways)
the circumstances with Dan are strange and not being able to find even a trace of him are stranger yet considering the search effort.

I really would like him to be found for the sake of the family, his friends and the concerned coummunity.

I watched a video to the testimony of Dan's parents before House of Representatives for Brandon's Law. I updated this post with some new facts and a link to the video. Here's a summary:

1) Early on, police kept searchers away from the bluff and refused to go down to look for Dan because it was "too dangerous."
2) Dan has an I-Phone with a GPS tracking "ping," but no one could act quickly enough to use it because they needed a court order.
3) Dan's father believes it was an abduction and that Dan is not in the river.
4) Dan often runs to the Ford Plant, U of M, or State Capitol.
5) He is an A-student, 3-star athlete, altar boy, catechism teacher, and Eagle Scout.
6) He only discovered a year ago that he is diabetic.
7) His insulin pump carries enough for a 3-day supply of insulin. No one knows when Dan refilled it last.

Lisa, thank you so very much for that update!!

Read all the cases listed on this site and found Kruziki,Rossini,Miller,Thiem,Jenkins,Fortney,Schiess,Kapfer,Leadly,Hayduk all had some type of contact(direct or indirect) with police before disappearing. That is 10 of them. Hmmmmm. Also,Snell was running and afraid of someone, he said in his cell phone call.

Just an observation. Perhaps someone with a police scanner went after the boys?

Which brings me to Dan. He was upset when he left the party but then called the party minutes later to talk to Sarah. What did he run in to? And why did he need to verify they were Anna's head lights to pick him as opposed to who's? And if he was not afraid why didn't he just walk the 5 blocks back to his dorm?

Some late night thoughts.

I really hope Dan's disappearance is not related to this string of cases listed here. There sure are a lot of similarities so far but hopefully when Dan is found there will be answers.

Prayers to the family and friends of Dan.

Corrections:
Whoops, messed up the names of those having direct or indirect contact with police before going missing: Kruziki,Rossini,Miller,Thiem,Jenkins,Fortney,Schiess,Kapfer,Leadly,Hayduk, and Welsh. That makes 11 ( not 10) and Snell who claimed he was in trouble with the police and later said he was afraid of someone and was being folowed.

You must have read my comments about speculation on cops and cop impersonators. (A couple of other people have posted comments about cops on the other victims as well.)

Police scanner? -These guys are walking.

Keep in mind that it's normal for guys to be distrusting of cops, especialy if they have had bad experiences in the past with officers or if they have a record.

The cop or cop impersonator is intruiging because most people do indeed obey percieved law enforcement. So if a rogue cop or cop impersonator picked up these guys, then most of them would go willingly or put up less resistance.

Also keep in mind that a cop might have the experience to know that drowning deaths leave behind little to no evidence, i.e. 'the perfect murder'.

Yes it is true that many of these guys have had run-in's with cops prior to their disappearance. In the case of Chris Jenkins, I read somewhere that there were 2 off duty cops at the bar that night and that they had befriended Chris' girlfriend. Like a lot of these guys, Chris was thrown out of the bar. The cops were not interviewed, because of course the death was ruled accident or suicide and not changed to homicide until some 4 years later.

And to answer people's question about why the cops dont investigate these deaths further, when a death is ruled an accident or sucide they don't investigate further. It's that simple.

I believe the cop or cop impersonator theory is a valid logical theory and is worthy of further thought. However, it's important to realize that it is just speculation until actual evidence is produced.

Let's not get carried away and accuse the cops of a vast conspiracy.

Anonymous said...

Per my reply above,

Just wanted to point out that the one thing against the cop or cop impersonator hypothesis would be the fact that most of the victims of such cases are females (especial w/ cop impersonator cases). (I mentioned this in a far earlier comment but just wanted to add it in case others missed it.)

I also wanted to add that of course most cops are law-abiding citizens.

I just wanted to apologize for commenting further on this blog entry. I publicly stated earlier that individuals need to go somewhere else to speculate on the sfkiller theory and then I turned around and did it myself. Again, I apologize.

Remember, these blog posts are about Dan Zamlen and not the sfkiller theory.

I am new to blogging. Any suggestions as where to blog about my police scanner theory?

I hadn't read all of the cases on this page until last night and was struck by how often police were mentioned prior to the disappearences of these boys. Not sure about cops but the person responsible may carry a police scanner? Also many mentions of cabs or needing a ride. Is there a blog related to this?

If there is a blog about this, how do I get there? I really have never done this prior to Dan going missing.

If I need to be redirected please tell me where to go. Thanks

Anything turn up in yesterday's search for Dan where they went door to door?

For future, I have been reading this blog for about a week because I was disturbed greatly about Dan's disappearance and not finding any information elsewhere - I found this blog and it has helped me greatly to get throught this and to pray better about it,and to pray for the family. But for me and others who might go out in early morning hours and who walk along dark streets - it might help you to stay out of the light when a car comes your way. It is best to keep yourself next to a tree, or lightpost if you see something coming. This assumes you are able to think clearly of course (not under the influence). I, a female, was once raped, and have learned over the years a lot of tricks, and one is to hide myself while waiting for buses in areas that are not very populated and also at night while waiting for buses. Go into the trees if walking near them at night if you see a headlight, and camouflage yourself next to bushes in daylight if you think you are too conspicuous in the daytime. After all, any car can come along and whip you up in just a second if you are stationary. I continue to pray for Dan and his family and thank you all for helping me to know what is out there and what we need to do to protect ourselves from evil, which is also out there and unfortunately does lurk.

The St. Paul Police department runs a program called ZAP (Zero Adult Providers) to curb underage drinking in the area.

Wonder if ZAP paid a visit to the party Dan was at just before he left?

Gives credence to the police scanner scenario.

Anonymous 1

Well until instructed otherwise I'll keep posting on this page.

So many boys with run-ins with the police (so obvious) almost makes me think it's not a cop but a poloce scanner (killer get's info. from).

Haven't heard about ZAP but that sure can explain why he left upset (and scared). Can't shake the feeling Dan was scared when he was walking to the river to "get away" from the party and also when he was on the phone with Anna.I have more to say but will wait to hear where it is appropriate to post this stuff.

A friend of mine worked campus security when I was in college and she told me they always figured out where the off campus parties were but as long as they were under control it wasn't a problem. I asked her because my then boyfriend was planning a pretty big party at the time. I vaguely remember her saying they were more concerned with on campus security and called the police for off campus trouble. I'm sure they used a radio to talk and say the police were being called to such and such address.

Am patiently waiting to find where to blog about this police connection to the missing boys.

Does any one know more about Dan?

Also, I'm pretty new to this and really am not convinced there is a SFK or connection to graffiti. Just interested at this point in the connection to the police and connection between all these colege aged men going missing

Anonymous said...

Brinson's search is at the Rum river? Now, why would police want to search a river when there is so much land to cover? Is he the latest victim? Are the police finally getting the connection.

Please post your police theory. This is an open forum and if Lisa finds your post objectionable she will state so and remove it. Until then, please keep the conversation going.

Dan's parents are open to the idea of an abduction as evident in watching their testimony given to the MN House.

We should explore every possible way he could have gone missing, not excluding the Smiley Face Killer theory and a connection to the police. Anything is possible until evidence shows otherwise.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 1

It is very obvious so many of the boys that went missing had contact(direct or indirect) with police prior to going missing.

My idea is that these boys going missing is connected (not forsure by graffiti and such) but by the large number involved with police prior to going missing. And this is just what is known. What other boys had contact with the police before going missing that we don't know about? We don't know although many needed rides and Snell said he was in trouble with Law enforcement shortly before going missing.Law enforcement denied having invlovement.

I guess I just wonder if there isn't some psycho out there using a police scanner to get information from the police about boys creating trouble.

For eg. If Dan left the party because the police showed up he might be afraid because he's under age and run. It would go over the police scanner and the perp. would know where to find intoxicated boys that probably went running from the police.

This also begs the question of why Dan called Anna for a ride when he was 5 blocks from home.He is a strong, athletic runner used to running 10 miles yet he needs a ride home? Or if he was going to the U of MN, 3 miles is not that far to walk. And why was it important he knew they were Anna's head lights? Why not just wait by the lamp at Saint Clair and wait. Why did he ask for help? Seems very much as though he was afraid and you have to wonder, of who?

I mean, if you're thinking he was disoriented from his sugar I doubt it. The Omnipod is an amazing device. People have said he was "trashed" but I heard different, that he was upset and some what intoxicated and he was not typically a big drinker per the people who helped search for him.

So,if he was not afraid, why call for a ride or why not just walk home? And did Dan call the police? Or did someone else from the party?
Or did Anna? Sarah?

Just think there is some connection to a police scanner and an abduction with Dan.

Any ideas on this? Challenges?

And where is Dan? He has vanished! The trees have no leaves which aides in the searching yet NOTHING has been found.

Also should be included in the list of names involved with police is Josh Szostak. I a video clip on SFkillers.com a cop cars passes by as he is out front of a bar acting disoriented. It's 4 minutes long and I was watching the cars (to see if any were police, not him and sure enough one went by.) So this makes 12 boys near cops prior to going missing.

Where are all the missing women cases? none, missing children? non, missing elderly? non, its always young men.
Gotta creep you out! Two in a month!! A nice small party, neither of the guys that intoxicated? Time for all party goers in minnesota, to start walking the guys to the cars as they do with the firls, this needs to be stopped! WTF!!!

I must be missing something because I didn't see any statements written by Boy in the Machine that were libelous (creating an unfavorable impression of someone or defaming them.) He did disagree with people, but if I didn't see anything that crossed the line. If you disagree, let me know where you see it, and I will take a look and consider removing it.

But I would like to say that BITM is certainly entitled to his own opinions--even if they are unpopular to some people....just like you are entitled to your opinions about how he conducts himself. I only had a problem with the WAY you went about it.

I don't feel that posting his address and details about his life is relevant. And it isn't helpful in making your point (ironically, it is very close to being libelous). If Boy in the Machine, had posted your address, I would certainly remove it.

With that said, post anything you want--within reason. I would encourage all readers, however, to remember that this blog is for tossing around theories and discussing cases, not for fighting amongst yourselves. We only have a limited amount of space to work with under the comments.

Also, I would really like for this to be an open forum and not have to moderate comments or prohibit anonymous ones. But I can only keep it open if we remain respectful. Family members do read this blog and the comments.

There was a large search (buses of people) again today and still nothing. Did Dan just vanish? I was thinking the searches were fruitless until I realized at least we know where Dan and his cell phone are not located.

They put yellow caution tape down sites at the bluff today to warn those going on the steep bluffs.

When I drove home today I was pretty ticked off at seeing yellow painted "BOO!" on a post along Cretin and another close by. It is new and wonder if some kid is trying to scare us about the "yelloh" graffiti? Just bothered me.

I hope Dan is found soon for the sake of the family, his friends and this community! Until then, searches will continue.

Anonymous 1's comments made me realize that these should be more accessible so people can comment on theories they are currently looking into.

So I am going to try tagging these posts as "theories," and you can comment under the particular one so it will be in the same place. I will be working on listing other generally accepted theories here too (stay tuned!).

I think this might help reserve the comments under each missing man for discussion about that particular case too.

I think your police scanner theory is a possibility for some of the cases.

But someone would have to call the police so it possibly wouldn't apply to the Zamlen case.

Also, remember reading about Edward Lamphear? He lied to one of the two victims that escaped after being sexually assualted, about being a cop, to explain the handcuffs he was using to restrain him him in the car. (for being drunk and disorderly by sleeping something off in his car}.

This knowledge that the PD and the FBI are motionless may encourage copycats because they feel safe even if they deviate a little from the routine or do something different, the cops will just call it another unrelated accident.
I'm convinced the evidence is there for homicide as does Gannon and Duarte, the well respected NY cops. And I just want to say thank god Gannon and Duarte didn't waste their careers working for the Department of Justice. The FBI was under Gonzales wasn't it? Gonzales had no reason to encourage investigation. He had "bigger" fish to fry. In fact, I'm beginning to think Gonzales may have had a reason to ORDER that these cases NOT be investigated.

Do you know a while back, the lead detective in the St Johns case, burned all the evidence in the vic's case before he himself died, maybe because he was an alum of St. Johns. Sounds crazy, but that's the report.

Sorry to go off topic but because I think some of these cases are related so its probably OK to explore what might be evidence or motive. I will not rule out Satanism. I hate it. I prefer a non-dualistic religion, but it takes all kinds.

This is not the only country going through these torturous losses.

If you berate sfk to me, then try to explain away the mounting evidence starting with Chris Jenkins, now a homicide, and Josh Szostak, with little to no decomposition. Explain why only the best and the brightest are disappearing or being murdered.

Guimond wanted a political career. Josh Szostak could have helped the peace effort in Iraq and he did at home. Brian Shaffer was an MD. Matt Kruziki was involved in progessive political organization. Microbiologists and bioengineering students are disappearing. Black men, Jews and Catholics are being targeted. Crosses and religious medals are being removed. Someone at the top seems to either be terrorizing a few people or all of us, or taking out this countrys future. Why? We need an investigation. A real one.

The real sfk organization, I believe has pods of killers that kill under orders. I believe it. Don't need to challenge me because you've said it way to many times. Some of you have a circular logic in that if the fbi says no to the evidence that the theory must not be true. And the theory must not be true because the fbi said no to the evidence.

And another thing. We all know that some cops have anger issues that were never resolved. We hear about these cop killings. They routinely kill innocent brown/black boys for no good reason. We see it on cell phone videos all the time.

Maybe some of the victims were killed by cops. I'll say it. Even Fox says stuff like that.

One victim was stopped for driving under the influence. A cop was reportedly the last one to see him. Who knows? Another point. Cop's have been known to take money, do dirty jobs, to supplement their meager income. They are human.

I have encountered wonderful cops. Their life is on the line much of their shift in some cases. I frankly admire a seasoned cop as well as a the sensitive one that ran over my cat, and drove it to the all night pet emergency room to have it put out of its suffering.

Back to one of my topics. Eyewitnesses,(FRIENDS) have caught people taking a student, out of a bar, ran to rescue the drugged victim from the kidnappers, took him home and told him all about it 12 hours later because he couldn't remember a thing. No use of a police scanner needed there that I can imagine. But with all the publicity of LE looking the other way, unrelated killings could possibly escalate. I hope not.

Anonymous 1

I agree, there will be copy cats as there always are when publicity get's heightened.

I just can't see a cell of cops doing this for several reasons.

1. Cells don't last very long because people disagree, talk, etc. and could not survive almost 20 years. Just not that many bad cops. (unless they're Bin Laden!)

2. One or two poeple could survive this long if one of the killers is very dominant over the other killer. Dominant/subordinate

3. I know every now and then cops do bad things and it sure gets publicity (such as the fire fighter who was starting fires). The media loves to report a cop not obeying the law!

4. It seems the killer/killers have something against cops as several of the victims were the sons of a cop.

5. I just see a connection to Law enforcement and theorize it is a police scanner and a drug. No, a scanner wouldn't be needed in all cases if the killer lurks around.

I don't "berate" the graffiti but I am not totally convinved of it either. I am keeping an open mind.

There are many assumptions I am making here. While I believe the drownings are related ( statistiaclly all these missing boys ending up in water is significant) I am noticing law enforcement being involved with many of the boys going missing. Also, I don't know of all the boys that have drowned, which are included (connected) and which are not. Which were murders and which were accidents. So many things to examine. Many assumptions.
Not sure if Dan is a part of it at this point but the circumstances are very similiar however he has not been found in water. He is still missing.
I hope Dan is found soon so answers can come to his family. I hope the search is relentless to bring him home. His parents are amazing and persistant and have changed Brandon's law. This could save missing people in the future. I applaud his parents for their strength through this and will continue to help in any way I can.

If anyone would like to help please go to: www.finddan.org

Just a theory - Dan was known to be the type of guy who would do the "right thing"; very strong values. Is it possible that he came across somebody at the party associated with drugs or something similar (they were selling? dealing? ) and he became upset and left, and these people went after him (thinking he might tell)? I'm thinking drugs because this seems to be associated with violence. It just seems like somebody would have had to have known that he was on the streets and that this isn't a random coincidence. I read in an earlier post that somebody suggested looking at other people's cell phone records; maybe somebody at the party called somebody else and they actually went after him? It would be worth a check, I would think. Hate to imagine such a thing, but something had to have happened that would tie in with his disappearance. I feel for his family and hope this is solved.

Interesting you mention that someone at the party may have had drugs and this upset Dan and so he left to "get away" from the party.

If Dan voiced he was upset I would imagine druggies would go after him so he wouldn't snitch. And perhaps this led to an accident of sorts.

I don't know if it was drugs or something else but Dan wanted to "get away" from the party for a reason.

The trouble began at the party. They were the last to see him (at least that we know of) so my gut feeling is the answers may be found back at the party. I just hope the police interviewed everyone (including people not invited but went there anyways) and that all were 100% honest.

I agree, what a coincidence that Dan, a random abductor and Anna were all in the same area at the same time. And odder yet that Anna didn't see anything. That was my initial gut feeling when Dan initially disappeared or vanished.

From everything I've read and heard, Dan is an amazing guy! He is smart, well-liked, kind and a "go to" type of guy. He has a good head on his shoulders.

All I can believe is he was afraid the night he went missing for reasons I've gone into before.

I hope his cell phone is found. It may provide answers. But even more, I hope Dan is found very soon. It is heart-breaking. The community is so distraught at how someone, such as Dan, can just vanish. Can't even imagine how his family feels. A guy with still so much to offer the world. Every search tells us where he is not and so it is worth while.I have no facts but just don't think he's in the river. A strong feeling he's not in this area and not in the river.

Yet still another night I will pray for his family and friends and will continue until he is found.

Noticed in Nathan Kapfer's page that his belongings were arranged around a statue.

Wonder if the World War 1 monument at Summit Ave. and Mississippi River Blvd. is of any significance here?

From the picture with the yelloh graffiti, it appears that it was written near the fencing that surrounds the base of the statue.

If anyone wants to know what BITM is about check my smiley face graffiti video on youtube and read his rude comments.I won't discuss something I know more about with him so don't worry about me arguing with him it would be a wasted effort.I also could give a shit what the FBI thinks about all this because they are not looking aggressively into this.If there are killers than they are not killers that would fit a typical profile so people should lighten up with theories that are given. There are still unanswered questions and law enforcement is not even trying to answer them.

RE-

THE POLICE THEORY.

There have been many cases of people dying from police restraint, wether because they were restrained while intoxicated or while having a medical condition that somehoe made them prone to the methods of restraint being fatal.

The restraint is usually face down with two of more police putting great wieght on the prone person.
The could acount for the findings of blood setttling on the face area, which is not said to be conducive of drownings?

This is just speculation ofcourse, but is it possible some of these boys were chased by actual police and once caught forcebly restrained while intoxicated or just out of breath from the run ,which led to to their deaths ?

Police corruption leads to disposal of bodies in rivers, as a cover up of the deaths?

This scenario Seems unthinkable i know, but that amount of cover ups and corruption cases surely leads to it being possible?

RE POLICE THEORY

the case of wade steffey cause of death elocricution.
The official conclusions of what happened in the wade steffey case are in my opnion totally inadequate.
He was not drunk - the police are said to be confident of this.

yet he chose to leave his shoe outside a door to a generator room on the college.

He was said to have died well inside the room and not just therefore as he went in through the unlocked utility room door and lost a shoe.

which was found 9 days after he disappeared in the door well which had water in it by that time.
the mccason slipper was ignored, even though the police said they had many items of footwear found.
why did they bother to search for such things in the first place if they did not try to match them to he missing person?

wades body was found 3 later!
in the utility room he was said to have tripped and fallen on some open live wires-
what kind of university has open live wires around in its utlitiy rooms>?
why did he leave his shoe?
would you leave your shoe if it came off your foot?
remeber it is stated he was not eloctrocuted as he went through the door but when his body was "
WELL INSIDE THE ROOM "-

that was the excuse for him not being found earlier than the 3 months, because his body was so far into the room nobody saw it until they happened to enter it 3 MONTHS LATER!!.

Just wondering if the ongoing investigation (if any) about Dan Zamlen has considered these facts:
A local gazette Crime Report cites a burglary occuring at St Thomas at about the time of Dan's disappearance:
http://toriop.blogspot.com

Also, less than 3 weeks before, another freshman from St Thomas University got killed while on vacation in Mexico (drug related?).
His "friends" refuse to comment on the circumstances of his death.

http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/dpp/news/Gunderson_Death_Puerto_Vallarta_Ashley_Jones_Apr_15_2009

Is St Thomas covering up - afraid of bad publicity?

Was the argument at the party about a drug deal that turned sour and resulted in the death of a fellow student? What do Ashley Jones and her boyfriend Zac Jensen have to say about this?

Many young people are attracted to drugs - it is a fact - but forget that drug dealers are also killers in spite of their smiley faces.

Did you call the police to tell them about a robbery taking place at the same time Dan went missing in the same area? It might be important information.

Today is 3 weeks since Dan went missing and still there are no answers. If Dan is in this area or in the river he would have been found. The river is still high due to run off but there have been people all over the river, rowing classes, boating all over and near the river on foot. (In fact a drowning just occured due to 2 men exploring the tunnels near the river). God forbid, if he turned up in the river I would fall over from shock.

Last night I dreamed he was dazed and confused and had been staying with someone he met that night by the U of MN. He was so dazed he didn't know anyone was looking for him and this girl was taking care of him and letting him stay with her as though he had a mantal problem. It was a very strange dream.

Anyway, I strongly think this week will bring answers in some way.(wishful thinking?)

Prayers to the Zamlens. May your son and your brother be brought home where he belongs.

Question: Is the gps history from the i phone retrievable/traceable even after the phone is dead? In other words, even 3 days later (after a court order), did the family get any clues as to where the phone went after the last phone call at about 2:30am? Or, would they have had to access that information before the phone lost power?

Also, has anyone read the comment under Nick Rossini's case about the person taken in a van from downtown minneapolis? (He escaped) Maybe there is some connection seeing as how Chris Jenkin's mother believes he was taken in a van as well. Maybe there are clues from that report.

One last thought: Dan's mom talks about the special scent dog that can track up to months later and in cars (through vents). Very interesting especially since that dog also stops at that intersection.

Sounds as though the St. Paul police are not being much help in finding Dan according to a recent blog entry at FindDan.org:

...The fact of the matter is the St. Paul Police Department has been doing nothing. They are not being helpful and doing all they can do help us find Dan and bring him home. The police have blown the search group off. They have told us to wait and see what comes up. They are not responding to your tips. They were rude to the victims family and unprofessional. There needs to be pressure put on them and other political leaders to make sure that all is being done to bring Dan home and others like him home. They are done with the search. It is a disgrace to their profession. They have not been helpful in the least. I wouldn’t trust them to find me if I got lost around here. I was out all day posting the new flyers and was planning on raking leaves again to look for his cell phone tomorrow. I get home and find he has been found dead. This is so sad and such a tradegy.

Another boy going missing and ending up in the river. I can not believe he was able to fall into the river on his own. If you lived in the area you could examine the bluffs yourself and see it as next to impossible, except at one point and the bloodhounds didn't follow his scent to that area (the Monument). I refuse to believe this was an accident! His cell phone is still on the bluff.

My heart felt sympathy to the Zamlen family and all of Dan's good friends, and to all who came from the Iron Range( you are all such neat people) to help search for him and his cell phone. I was so sorry to hear of your loss.

Monique777 said...

I hope the Zamlens get a private investigator to look into this as the Jenkins did.

We already know the police aren't going to say foul play is invloved! It is just that predictable. In addition it was just as predictible Dan would be found in water when all evidence of the evening he went missing pointed to an abduction! And that the river had people all over it on several nice days in April and saw nothing, and police searches of the river showed nothing! And yet, he is found in the river not far from where he went missing.

I blogged earlier Dan seemed afraid the night he went missing. Couldn't shake the feeling and still can't. I wonder to myself, so when was Dan actually PUT into the river and by whom?

All so sad...prayers for the Zamlens and prayers you will get a PI.

The body was found in grate. Would like to know which grate?

I would also like to know the condition of his body, what was he wearing, what belongings were still with him?

Anonymous said...

There is no way that Dan fell into the river. All of the evidence points to foul play. There is no way that his body could have stayed in the river (a 1-mile or so stretch from where he would have "fallen in") for almost 30 days and not be found until yesterday.

I'm pretty convinced he was abducted, killed, and put into the river yesterday or Thursday night, right near the grate where he was found. I hope his autopsy reveals more clues.

We must pray for him and his family! May his soul rest in peace!

It appears to be quite old, and I suspect it was left before Dan disappeared.

There is a lot of graffiti under this bridge, much of which was left by the Vatos Locos or Surrenos 13 gangs in the area.

Devil horns, tails, pitchforks, etc. are quite common in graffiti, according to this article:

Just some food for thought. I'm not ruling anything out at this point.

This case sounds too much like the Smiley Face Killers!!!!!!!!!! Perhaps the police need to look into that. The smiley face killers, go after young male college students, who are good looking and intelligent, abduct them and then drown the victims, making the drowning look like an accident due to being intoxicated. The smiley face killers also drug their victims in order to make this plan work. This case was no accident.

There was another young man, within the last few years, who had the same story as Dan… an athlete at St Thomas who was sexually conflicted. He also committed suicide by taking a swan dive off the parking ramp at Mall of America. If St Thomas were like any other college, SOMEONE would have intervened in both cases. Since St Thomas does not acknowledge these types of feelings, it generals a tremendous sense of desperate loneliness and powerlessness in young men who trying to find themselves. If Jack McCoy was the St Paul District Attorney, he would charged St Thomas with depraved indifference and made sure someone when to jail. I will always remember The Story of Dan and think of him as a sanctified martyr.
