Photos from Mississippi River Blvd

Dan Zamlen has now been missing for over a week. He did not come home for his 19th birthday, and he did not make it home for Easter. I went out walking on Mississippi River Boulevard this weekend because I felt the need to do something. Although the search has been called off, I saw many St. Thomas students and other people like myself who were out hoping to find him. I have posted some photos and a description of the area. (Click on the photos to enlarge.)

------------------------
The area is a quiet upper middle- to upper class residential neighborhood with many large homes. It is within walking distance to St. Thomas University and Byrne residential hall. There were annual parking restrictions in effect on St. Claire Avenue, so we parked two blocks over on Princeton Avenue. You could see St. Thomas University, which was facing the river (to the right of our car, also facing the river).

From our car, we walked across the street to Mississippi River Blvd., and turned right (the direction of the University of Minnesota where Dan had said he was intending to walk).

The path along the river is a concrete sidewalk used for both pedestrians and bicycles. To the right was a patch of grass and then the street. To the left was 5-10 feet of grass (it narrowed in some places) then a gradually sloping hillside with some brush and trees.

There are places along the hill down to the river where the incline is more steep, but it seems that you would have quite a bit of warning before you got to the edge. There was a small scenic overlook with a railing in one area where the hill became more steep.

If you continue following the sidewalk, the residential halls for the University are on the right side ofthe street, followed by a couple of University buildings. Near Byrne Hall, you cross a small stone bridge with a culvert underneath leading to the river.

Continuing down the sidewalk, the path looks much like the photos above, with a gradual slope. Then you come to a small park with a statue. The statue has a round marble area surrounding it and an inscription on the base memorializing the losses of St. Paul and Ramsey County in World War I.

Beyond the statue to the left, there is an outcropping of rock--the only place I could see where it would be possible to fall direcly into the river.

Many people were sitting on the rocks.

If you leave the rock area, turning right, there is a steep embankment with a creek underneath. You could hear the creek. There were paths going down there, but they were steep and would require a good pair of hiking boots.

Looking to the right of the creek, was the street. The photo of the unicycle is looking back in the direction of our car.

We continued down the path, walking to Cretin Avenue before turning around. The whole walk was .6 miles. The last two pictures are on the way back to the car, just before we reached the park.

A reader also sent me more photos of the area that she took over the weekend of 4/19.

Check out the new yellow graffiti just posted under Mississippi River Blvd pictures. Yellow is spelled "yello" and same hand writing and paint type!

Sorry to discredit the Ohio link to the "yelloh" graffiti.

Also, a tree with red paint? on it.

Back in February, Thomas were coming down the Larch Mountain trail after dark and were in the area between the two log bridges when we came across a nice brief case, book bag loaded with student materials. It probably weighed 25 pounds. Not something someone would take on a hike or abandon half way up the Larch Mountain trail.

There were papers in the bag from Mount Hood Community College and a name: Rafael Velichko

Early the next day I brought the book case to Mount Hood Community College and left it with the Lost and Found. The girl there said she would contact Rafael. I thought about how surprised he might be to go into school that day and find his lost possessions already there and waiting for him.

This morning I happened to be reading about the latest death on Eagle Creek and came across this:

"Hikers came upon the body of Rafael Velichko, 20, a Mt. Hood Community College student, Wednesday, Feb. 11, on the Wahkeena Falls trail about two miles up from Multnomah Falls Lodge.

The Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s office determined the Southeast Portland resident died of hypothermia, a condition where the body’s core temperature drops below what is necessary to maintain heart rate and essential bodily functions. Velichko was wearing only a pair of underwear. Investigators found no clothing along the trail, in his car parked at the trailhead or along routes leading to the trail, according to Multnomah County Sheriff’s officials.

Results of a toxicology report have not yet been determined."

Anyone had any luck accessing the Forest Service sites? Both Mt Hood and Siuslaw have been 'currently unavailable' the past couple days at least. I'd imagine routine maintenance generally doesn't last multiple days..

nope, no luck gene. looks like the entire site is down now...

Forest Service Website Is Currently Unavailable. The Forest Service Web server is currently undergoing routine maintenance or has encountered an unexpected problem. We are working to bring the Web server back online as swiftly as possible.
We apologize for any inconvenience that this downtime may have caused.
Website information related to the Forest Service's Economic Recovery efforts is available at: http://fs.usda.gov/recovery

Apparently several government agencies (both state and federal) got hit with a nasty worm infection and they're all dealing with it now. Must have been pretty hardcore for their servers to have been down this long too.

They have been down since at least Thursday. The Trout Lake office said they didn't know the reason.

Saw this post on nwhikers.net:

According to the Avast Forum several government websites have been attacked with an Iframe-inf coming from a Chinese domain.

I suspect the govnt isn't going to tell us, but I've asked the various computer security experts in the family (three of them) to tell me what they can. Whether they can find out anything, or whether I understand a word of what they do find out, is another matter.

The USFS seems to be back online. No explanation for the time out (at least not that I see).

Deputies talk disturbed man down from gorge waterfall

by Michael Russell, The Oregonian
Wednesday February 11, 2009, 9:08 PM

Deputies talked a Fairview man down from a 40-foot drop at the top of the waterfall at Shepherd's Dell on Tuesday, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies responded to reports of an abandoned car blocking the bridge over Young's Creek on the Historic Columbia River Highway about 10:30 a.m., said Deputy Paul McRedmond, a sheriff's spokesman.

They found the car's driver walking down the middle of the road, soaking wet and covered in mud.

As the deputies approached, the man fled uphill into heavy brush, eventually getting stuck at the top of the waterfall.

Two deputies cross-trained in white-water rescue and crisis intervention climbed up and talked the man into being helped down the hill into a waiting ambulance. He was taken to Mt. Hood Medical Center for evaluation.

Rescuers get stranded man down from Gorge cliff

06:18 PM PST on Wednesday, February 11, 2009

By DAVID KROUGH, kgw Staff

Watch the KGW report

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Rescuers in the Columbia Gorge were able to get a despondent man down to safety Tuesday after he (my edit-ran way from police ) and got stranded at the top of a steep cliff near a waterfall.

ODOT workers called Multnomah County deputies after they found an abandoned vehicle blocking the bridge over Young's Creek around 10:30 a.m.

Deputies said they saw the driver, a 46-year-old Fairview man, soaking wet and covered in mud walking down the middle of the road.

According to police, the man yelled "you're going to have to shoot me if you want me to stop." Before deputies could get him to stop, they said he scrambled up a nearby hill where he eventually got stranded along a 40-foot cliff alongside a waterfall.

A Corbett rope rescue team and medics were called in to help deputies get to the man, where they were able to talk to him and help get him down the cliff.

He was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

Police said the man’s wife and daughter got to the scene and thanked rescuers for likely saving his life.

This stands out to me.

According to police, the man yelled "you're going to have to shoot me if you want me to stop."

STOP WHAT??!!!

notice he was walking down the road soaking wet and covered in mud-
away from the falls until the police met him as they went up.

THEN HE RAN UP

Notice also there is no mention of a suicide attempt.

Reminds me of the man who walked wading into the water and said to police.

Police investigate plunge as suicide attempt
MAN RECOVERING
Posted By COREY LAROCQUE , REVIEW STAFF WRITER
Posted 1 month ago

Family members have been reunited with the man who survived a jump over Niagara Falls and then 45 minutes in the near-freezing Niagara River Wednesday, police say.

His condition was upgraded to stable and he's expected to make a full recovery, a Niagara Parks Police report states.

He was taken to Greater Niagara General Hospital immediately after being pulled out of the river, but was later transferred to Hamilton General Hospital.

Police say he's a 30-year-old resident of a western Ontario community, but won't disclose more about him at his family's request.

"We're investigating it as an attempted suicide. There's nothing to lead us to believe it is anything but that," said investigating officer Sgt. Chris Gallagher. He was the first person to respond to the 911 call a tourist made at 2:11 p. m., after witnesses saw a man climb the stone wall 100 metres above the brink of the Horseshoe Falls and jump into the water.

Gallagher rushed from the brink of the falls to the river's edge, where he urged him to swim to shore.

But the man, who resisted several attempts to save him, disregarded Gallagher and swam further into the river.

Rescuers had no idea who the man was when they pulled him from the river Wednesday around 3 p. m.

He was naked when firefighters took him from the water, suffering from hypothermia and a gash to his forehead.

After going over, he managed to stay afloat and swim in the lower river until rescuers could reach him. Witnesses said the man was wearing dark clothing when he went into the water, but the force of the water is believed to have ripped the clothes off his body.

"I can't imagine what he was going through. My foot was in the water for a limited amount of time. And I was cold," Gallagher said.

Shortly after news broke of the harrowing rescue, parks police began fielding calls from other police forces trying to match their missing-person cases with the man who went over the falls.

The man's immediate family contacted their local police department after seeing a TV news report about the harrowing rescue, Gallagher said.

At approximately 10 p. m., police discovered his abandoned car in the Niagara Parks Commission parking lot across from Table Rock House and confirmed his identity. Gallagher would not say whether he had left a suicide note in the car or anywhere else, but police are convinced it was not a stunt, an accident or foul play.

Tourists at Table Rock witnessed him climb over the stone wall 100 metres above the brink of the Horseshoe Falls and enter the water on his own.

Because this is the third time a person has gone over the falls without any protective gear, police have a new "mindset" about river rescues, said Gallagher.

"The mindset of the Niagara Parks Police changed in 2003 when Kirk Jones went over the falls," said Gallagher, a 21-year veteran of the parks police. "We realized, 'Hey, people can survive this. We need to be able to get to them."

Jones was a 40-year-old Michigan man who jumped the falls in October 2003 and survived.

In 1960, seven-year-old Roger Woodward was swept over the falls after a boating mishap on the upper river.

Jones' jump convinced parks police to form the high-angle river team, seven officers with special training to handle rescues in the Niagara gorge or in the river's unpredictable, swift water.

One of them, Const. Shawn Black, was aboard the helicopter when Hafen flew into the gorge in a bid to reach the man from the air.

The parks police team practises with city firefighters, regional paramedics and Niagara Helicopters pilot Ruedi Hafen, who has an ongoing arrangement to shuttle emergency personnel to spots in the gorge and along the river that are difficult to access by truck or on foot.

Now, when a call comes in that someone has gone over the falls, they respond with a glimmer of hope it will be a rescue effort, not to pull a corpse from the river.

"We practise this two or three times a year. To see it flow so smoothly and see everything fall into place (on Wednesday), it gives you a taste of why we do this," Gallagher said.

Emillie Hoyt missing
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YyaTn9lzNN8/SH6-NurbFJI/AAAAAAAAACY/XdUMSY92rN0/s200/Emillie+Hoyt+2004+2.jpg

As most of you know, my sister is missing. Of course, this is a constant theme in my blogging, you know, work it out on paper etc.

The process of looking for her has not been easy, which I guess is to be expected. It took me quite a while to make it public knowledge. Early on we had a very bad experience with the Florida State Police that left us without a resource and that experience caused us to work independently. This was the case from Dec. 2005 until Aug 2007, when through a bizarre set of circumstances Emillie's case became the business of a detective in Del Ray Beach, FL. He passed the case on to a fantastic detective in Highland Beach, which is the last place that she was seen.

I hope your sister is found! I can't even imagine what it would be like to have a family member go missing.

I believe relentless searching will bring answers. People give up too soon, the media settles down after time and the general public starts to move on. I believe with Dan it must remain in the public eye. If someone did something to him let it stare them in the face for a very long time...and perhaps someone who knows something will break knowing it's not going to just go away.
And on an opptomistic side, people newly diagnosed with diabetes are able to withstand incredible sugar lows and highs because their body has learned to tolerate these extremes. Eg. A diabetic male with sugar at 300 (normal 100-120) can be fine where as one without diabetes would have all types of physical symptoms.
I am hypoglycemic and my sugar has been at 40 and the nurses couldn't understand how I was walking around just fine. I did feel a bit light headed but my body apparently had adjusted itself to such a sugar low. My point in all this is that it is still possible Dan is alive some where.Maybe not a strong possibility but the possibility is still there. My prayer is that he is returned to his family ASAP.

Yeah! I have a name now. I use to be Anonymous 1 and didn't like it!

Look at the new pictures and you'll see "yello" graffiti. The "h" is not there but it is the same handwriting.

Check out the tree with the drawing too. Do you see it as paint or blood?

Anonymous said...

THIS IS VERY INTERESTING

YELLOH BECAME YELLO

As to it being written in the same style as the previous yellOH i dont think it is the same style .

i saw that picture when it was on this blog, i am the one who made the connection to OHIO -OH and the yellow medicine county and river case.

now it is a fact that A Indian Lake with he longest name Has also has had a name CHANGE

AN O and H HAVE BEEN OFFICIALY REPLACED BY A U AND N.

If it were possible to know when this new yello was painted, and if it was painted just after the name change of the longest named indian lake in the usa, we could have some connection of significance to the spelling change of YELLOH TO JUST YELLO.

NOTICE YELLO IS STILL INCORRECT IN ITS SPELLING.

Does anyone know if that slab of stone was graffiti free at one point then painted with YELLO after a certain date?

This kind of data is indespensible in ascertaining if this or any other graffiti is relevent to THIS case or ANY OF THE PREVIOUS cases.

Without THAT KIND OF DATA there is no substantiated or corrobative EVIDENCE OR PROOF THAT ANY OF THE GRAFFITI IS OF SIGNIFICANCE TO THIS OR ANY OF THE POREVIOUS CASES.

I laso think it is now of relevence that the oroginal pictures of the YELL"OH" graffiti be reposted for comparison to the new YELL"O" graffiti

Anonymous said...

4/19
so these pcutes were taken on the 19th of april 2009

Lisa took her pictures inclding the YELLOH Graffiti one on Ressurection sunday? The 12th of april
or the 11 th saturday?

In any case the new pictures of the YELLO graffiti, also painted on stone or concrete, were taken after Lisas'.
Atmost 7 days after or 6 days afterwards.

So there is a week available for the new graffiti to have been added and the word YELLOH to have undergone a revision of spelling too a new version spelt YELLO in a different place to the previous graffiti which was found 2 weeks after Dan's disaapearence?

But was said to have been seen there by locals, before Dan went missing.

Now as i have said the graffiti being placed in an area before a aperson goes mssing does not neccasarilly mean it was not placed there for an event. infiact if this ganag emplys this graffitit as a mark of its being active in a place, placing their markers in a certain location before an actual gang event, is to my mind consistenet with one of the uses of picture language.

I also can not help to think the ganag may be watching this website amongst others and seen my pointing out the OH is the first graffitit and my making the OHIO connection . Myabve they are saying NO TO MY SEEING OH AS OHIO
IN THERE YELLOH SO THEY CHANGED IT TO YELLO.?

THE SEEMING UPSIDE DOWN QUESTION MARK AT THE END OF THE NEWLY DISCOVERED YELLO? ALSO FITS THIS POSSIBILITY.

This ofcourse can still leave the yellow medicine river and country connection, if that is what they want.
after all previous locations names have been given to other locations of new drownings havent they, or previous drownings.
such as the other indiana word sinassawa ?
I CAN NEVER REMEMBER THAT WORD BUT YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

"The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree." (Acts 5.30.)

Yes, Jesus Christ was nailed to a tree and hung on it for our sins.

Unsolved Mystery: The Case Of The Smiley Face Killings

Today's show will feature special guests: Kristi Piehl (Award winning investigative reporter), and Bill Szostak the father of the smiley face victim Josh Szostak. Retired NYPD detectives Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte say they've found a link between the river drownings of at least 40 men in 25 cities in 11 states. They say 19 men were killed in Minnesota and Wisconsin alone. Detectives say this is the mark of a gang of killers. The men are all young and athletic. City after city, the spot where the body went into the water, left behind was the symbol of a smiley face. *Spolight BTR Host: Jerry Butler will also stop by the show.

The "yello" was found on the other side of the river about a week later. Don't know how long it's been there. Walk the area and hadn't noticed it which means it maybe didn't catch my attention before or it was new.

Now, what is new is yellow paint saying BOO! in the area (near St. Thomas.) I have seen it twice. Thought it was put up to scare us by some colege kid/kids.

If you look at the tree closely, examine the red on it and design is there any thing you see? What do you make out?

you just put that address in your web browser and you can download the mp3 of the interview

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/rtrw/2009/04/19/Unsolved-Mystery-The-Case-Of-The-Smiley-Face-Killings.mp3?localembed=download

i dont think there is any new info on any of the interviews just genral recaps.

as for the red paint on the tree i cant see anything i meantioned it looked a bit like a E
made me think of e commerce.
that BOO graffitit can you get pictures of that too is the stlye the same?

monique777 said...

I could take pictures of BOO! but one is in a very heavy traffic area on Cretin Ave.If you live in the area you can't miss it as it would be on your right hand side as you exit I-94 heading south on Cretin/Vandalia exit.Just not sure I want to be on foot with all that traffic for a picture but if you are really interested I can do that for you if you're not in the area.If the light is red I could take it from my car. Are you really interested? I don't know if it is the same paint etc. I seriously can't remember where the other BOO! is but it's close by and am sure if I looked I could find it.
I chalked it up to kids trying to scare people in the area.
Could you tell me why you think it's relevant?
Also, it would be cool if the "yellow" theories could have a place at theories. Seems someone is on to something but having a hard time following it..like is moonseed related?

monique777 said...

Also, moonseed is not in a toxicology test as "moonseed". Need a chemical name for it. Do you know the chemical name for moonseed?

Anonymous said...

Menispermaceae (order Ranunculales)

The North American species, Canada moonseed, or yellow parilla (M. canadense), with lobed leaves and greenish-white flowers, bears black, grapelike fruit with crescent-shaped seeds. M. dauricum, from East Asia, and M. mexicanum, from Mexico, have similar properties. In particular, the seeds of all these species may cause a curare-like poisoning; one of the ingredients in curare comes from another member of Menispermaceae (Chondrodendron tomentosum).

Anybody who can VOLUNTEER please call 651-962-6129.

On Friday people are needed to post new flyers of Dan with updated information. If you have an hour or two of free time just show up at any time. The above number will give the location to go to.

On Saturday, people are needed to search for and hopefully recover Dan's cell phone.

Monique777:

Lisa has asked for people to stop posting theories under the wrong blog posts.

I mean, the parents may be reading them and I'm sure they are not happy to see 200+ comments that have nothing to do with their missing son.

There are blog entries dedicated to speculation and theories.

(The moonseed thing has been posted so many times now that It's giving me a headache.)

Anonymous said...

Just a reminder of what Lisa said:

With that said, post anything you want--within reason. I would encourage all readers, however, to remember that this blog is for tossing around theories and discussing cases, not for fighting amongst yourselves. We only have a limited amount of space to work with under the comments.

Please post any theories you want and listen to NOBODY else but Lisa when it comes to rules on this blog.

monique777 said...

That's why I asked for a "yellow" theory to be posted in the cloud because I'm having a hard time following it.(My last post). Also, on this site under River road are new posts of pictures with graffiti saying "yello".
It is making it hard for me to disipher what has to do with the yellow theory and if it's related to moonseed. Don't know if what is being interjected between anonymouses is related or someone elses seperate thought.

It seems an interesting theory with much thought given to it. I respect all theories but as I mentioned it's hard to follow with other thoughts in between.

Tomorrow they need volunteers to help search for Dan's cell phone and to post new updated flyers in area businesses. As students leave to go home the need for volunteers has increased. If you are from this area and have a free couple of hours they would appreciate it!

LES BAUX DANTE AND YELLOH

Les Baux is now given over entirely to the tourist trade, relying on a reputation as one of the most picturesque villages in France. Its population of 22 in the old village is a fraction of its peak population of over 4,000, and many of its buildings (in particular the castle) are picturesque ruins.

The surrounding dramatic rocks and cliffs are said to have inspired Dante Alighieri in his vivid descriptions of Purgatory in the Inferno.

In the Château des Baux demonstrations of huge catapults (the biggest Trebuchet in Europe, a Couillard also called biffa and a Bricole) are given every day from April to September.

Les Baux was the third pitstop on the US television show Amazing Race 1

SO Dan Zamlen has been found in the river a couple miles from where he was last known to be. Question: Why would it take so long for his body to surface, if it had been in the water all that time. I think he was abducted and placed there, as apparently others on this site also think.

Monique777 said...

Coincidence?

Dan was found in the river 1.7 miles from where he originally went missing.(less than 2 miles).

In the month Dan was missing, that stretch of river was searched via sonar and infra red by police, searched by the resue team, scoured about by people who go down the bluffs, boated on, rowed on, canoed on, etc. and no one saw him?

monique777 said...

He traveled less than 2 miles in a river that was flowing at 40 mph the day after he went missing. Yet, in a months time he only traveled 1.7 miles?

Does Dan defy the laws of nature?
When the river is flowing fast it's just too rough to get caught on anything for any length of time. And the river was rough for a long while after he went missing. How can they explain this?

To Anonymous who posted what I said on April 24.

The BOO in St. Paul was there on 4/24/09. The "Sad Clown" on Gerald's Twitter page was posted on 4/27/09 where he holds a sign saying BOO.

I can't see it as anything other than a very eery coincidence. It scared me at first until I saw the dates. I don't know why you reposted what I posted on 4/24/09 other than you are thinking it's connected?

The killer would have had to predict that Gerald was going to post that picture on twitter while he was painting BOO on the signs in St. Paul. Can't imagine he's a psychic too.

I sent some pictures to Lisa not knowing what any of it meant at the time. I'm not use to seeing graffiti in this area as the city covers it up really fast if there is some. I run/walk in the area so notice anything new- it catches my eye. So....any of the pictures could mean absolutely nothing. And graffiti increasing in this area could be due to pranksters and even more simply a lot of people have been drawn to the area after Dan went missing. Some of these people might tag things.

monique777 said...

But what do you mean someone else can do the signing in for twitter on Gerald's page? I don't know much about twitter.

Also, I just started blogging after I returned from Palm Springs, I mean the day after Dan went missing..really tired...so the graffiti picture taking was because initially there was a yelloh picture posted by Lisa so I thought we were suppose to look for graffiti. I was brand new to this and thought there was some killer who used graffiti. Now I'm thinking all of the stuff is just random or pranks. not cutting on anyone who believes in graffiti connection..just I am not able to see it. needed time to learn things.
I didn't know Dan but his family is still in my thoughts and prayers. The Zamlens are such kind people. I helped look for him and his cell phone to no avail. This was such a sad ending.

Tenneguy said...

I do not believe it can be assumed a killer is not using the same MO.How do we know graffiti was not left every time?We do not.If it was not for one person in a city of 150,00 there would be no one to tell you a smiley face and boo was left in graffiti in Tennessee.Does the media or police have to tell us in order for it to be true? They are not investigating graffiti in the first place.Someone should at least talk to city and Park employees before they reach that conclusion.A lot of the drownings took place before we even heard about smiley face killers. You still don't list the victim even though he was athletic, there was less than a half moon,he went missing on Thursday and there are to many similarities to be coincidence. You can't find what you are not looking for.
